July is here. And suddenly, we’re in the middle of the year. That sudden panic attack – did you feel it, too?
Cheer up and look at the bright side. Savour the beauty of moments within reach. Like this female House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) that Sandy shot for us in Carolina. It’s The Green Ogre July wallpaper. And it doubles as a calendar, too. Just so that you won’t forget to download our next wallpaper. 😉

It’s become something of a cliche for the urban pluviophile to await rain in June. Thanks to erratic weather patterns, however, we see more spectacular rainfall in the summer showers of May than in the early monsoon months. And what if we are displaced, removed by migration, to another land where rainfall patterns are significantly different from those to which we are habituated? Do we then substitute the traditional motifs of the monsoon, the ritual harbingers of rain? Unimaginable, but out go the Asian Koel and the Jacobin Cuckoo.
Our resident ogre In North America, Sandeep Somasekharan pictured this Chipping Sparrow (Spizella passerina) foraging in the rain.
Another Green Ogre special calendar wallpaper that you can enjoy all June to track the days until the monsoon arrives in full force.
Download it for your desktop, laptop and iPad screens to keep rain close to your heart this June.
May is here. And if you’re in the northern hemisphere, the world is ripening for summer. In India, though, summer is pretty much here. Heat waves are just beginning to up, while freak thunderstorms and hailstorms threaten to kill you if you wander too far from home.
Get a life. How about killing time this May in the company of an assassin? The Robber Fly or Assassin Fly (read Arun’s Encounter post on it) is akin to a raptor of the insect world. Here we have it, captured in a moment of quiet, murderous contemplation.
Hmm, what do the bloodthirsty dream of?

April is here. On the Indian subcontinent, a few stray summer showers are due. In North America, though, it’s still late spring. Bright colours flash like signals against the melting snow, the gauze of foliage parts to reveal a shape of cheer. It’s a female Northern Cardinal — no way near as stunning as her beau, the scarlet male, but beautiful enough to make the subject of our April calendar-wallpaper. Shot beautifully by Sandeep Somasekharan, she’s all ready to make April shine on your desktop, laptop and iPad screens. Go ahead, pick a size.

The northern hemisphere is uncoiling from the icy grip of winter, which over the last few years has clenched its teeth in a frightening, cold-blooded severity. In the United States, where Sandeep Somasekharan has now made his station, he observes the inflorescence of the new season, the first blooms of spring. That always inspires poetry.
Sample this from Thoreau, who saw in the change of seasons more than what meets the eye:
The first pleasant days of spring come out like a squirrel and go in again.
That’s so evocative – the short-lived exuberance of spring. Elsewhere, the author of Walden mused:
Spring. March fans it, April christens it, and May puts on its jacket and trousers.
This March, put Spring in your step. Download our calendar-wallpapers and spread the hay fever, er… the joy of spring.
