Summer 2024 saw a once-in-a-lifetime event play out for most of us alive on earth—the simultaneous emergence of two broods of cicadas. Sandeep Somasekharan was there to witness it. The last time this happened was in 1803, when Thomas Jefferson was the President of the USA, and Napoleon Bonaparte was selling Louisiana for pocket change to the US so he could buy shiny guns to fire at the British. The next time these 17-year and 13-year broods of cicadas meet, none of us would be around. Perhaps humanity wouldn’t either..

A tropical birdwatcher discovers fall in North America

In the frigid forests of Seattle, a college-going birdwatcher from tropical India encounters a whole new season. Birding during the fall is a challenge, but the rewards are more than worth the labour for young Anirudh Arun. In his own words: “For the past 18 years, my life revolved around three familiar seasons: summer, winter, and monsoon. I’ve experienced them and photographed various species of animals thriving within their rhythms. But recently, after enrolling at the University of Washington in Seattle, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to witness and capture the vibrant beauty of fall—an entirely new season to explore, both through my lens and my passion for birdwatching.”
