It’s October, let’s hit the road

We’re making a departure from pictures of creatures and nature. This October, already nine days too late, we’re giving you something else to inspire your travels. The road. Yes, the open road. Shaded by trees, with gossamer sunlight filtering through shafts of mist.

The road is full of potential. Full of possibilities. Full of promise. And though roads in the wrong places bring with them their share of troubles — as in the Amazon, for instance — we here shall train our focus only on the happy things about roads. In that they take us where we want to go, inspire poetry and song. And, of course, amazing photos.

Since Sandy, who shot and designed this month’s calendar wallpaper, is spending a long sojourn in the Land of the Free, here’s something that would inspire the spirit of Walt Whitman to recite afresh from the Song of the Open Road:

The Soul travels;
The body does not travel as much as the soul;
The body has just as great a work as the soul, and parts away at last for the journeys of the soul.

Hit the road, then. May it inspire your long and fruitful wanderings.
