It’s the end of winter and this Blyth’s Reed-warbler, wintering in the Indian subcontinent far away from its breeding grounds in the northern latitudes, is fattening up for the journey back home. Hopping about the branches of a beautiful Indian Gooseberry (Embellica) tree, it devours plant aphids by the beakful.

The Greater Painted-snipe is an interesting bird that exhibits a curious phenomenon called polyandry. The female, which is colourful and larger, courts and maintains a harem of duller-coloured males, which incubate the eggs once the female lays them. The fathers bring up the brood.

The Coppersmith Barbet is a small, brightly coloured bird of woodlands. It usually picks a high perch on top of a tree and sings its song, which sounds like a long, monotonous series of hiccups.

But all is not well with these paradise isles. Climate change and ocean acidification threatens the coral reefs. Native forests have given way to plantations and monocultures, and invasive species have overrun most of the islands. How can we save the Seychelles?
