A fascinating story of bird migration has come to light, involving a Bar-Headed Goose (Anser indicus), which was recently photographed near Somnathpur in Karnataka.
On December 26, 2007, Niranjan M. posted a picture of a flock of bar-headed geese at a lake near Somnathpur. One individual in the flock bore a yellow neck band with the serial number E6. The ringed bird was traced to a ringing project in Mongolia. Gopi wrote to Martin Gilbert of WCS, who identified the ringed bird as the same one that was “caught on 19 July 2007 in the Darkhad Valley” in northern Mongolia. The picture taken at that time confirms that.
Mongolia to Karnataka… what a moving story!
Update: Another bird from the Mongolian flock (C6) was photographed at Veer Dam near Pune, Maharashtra
